Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru is purposefully insistent on reactivating the Oferekpe Water Treatment plant, to expand the reticulation of water in Ebonyi State and employ to judicious use, the massive N7.6bn project (as at the time of construction).
During the State Executive Council Meeting on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, he approved funds for the reactivation of the Plant, and appointed a committee chaired by Prince John Nwamgbo (SA Mining Development) to handle the project.
Since then, the committee commenced work by visiting the treatment plant to evaluate the state of the machinery at the plant. While a good part of the plant is in good shape, there are critical works to be done in some other areas to get it functional. They have traced the pipeline from Oferekpe to Abakaliki and have assessed the extent of the equipment and vandalized items.
The committee has estimated the cost implication of the mechanical aspect of the plant and are at the stage of procurement and subsequent installation of the equipments. The treatment plant is automated and requires various items for reactivation. According to the Chairman, they are expecting arrival of the items from next week.
The Mega Water Treatment Plant inter alia, has a raw water pumping station, aeration and flocculation units, filters, a power station, and so on. This giant water scheme, has a production capacity of 100,000m3 per day, and is the largest water scheme East of the Niger. It was built during the administration of His Excellency, Chief Martin N. Elechi.
Interestingly, it has become a regular song on the lips of Ebonyi people, that the present administration is bringing back to life, weighty projects that were abandoned to ruins. Some of them are – Nkaliki Farm, Ebonyi State Pipe Production Company, Ebonyi State Trade Centre, and Ezilo Water Treatment Plant, among others. Thank you, Your Excellency, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for always hitting the right keys in this beautiful music of meeting the needs of Ebonyi people.
